Message from the Deputy University Librarian

On behalf of the National Defence University-Kenya Library System, I extend a warm welcome to all students, faculty, and staff of the NDU-K. The Library consists of the up-coming main library at the Seat in Lanet –Nakuru; the National Defence College library, Joint Command and Staff College library; Kenya Military Academy library; International Peace Support Training Centre Library, Defence Forces Technical College Library and the Defence College of Health Sciences library.

The overall objective is for the college Libraries to maintain their individual unique specificities, but share resources and services. These libraries are dotted all over the NDU-K campuses and provide you with both print and online resources. In addition, the libraries provide you with services, programs and spaces that enable you to achieve your personal and academic goals.

Objectives

  • Selecting, acquiring and organizing relevant and up-to-date information resources in all formats appropriate to the information needs of the university.
  • Establishing, promoting and maintaining a wide range of services and dissemination strategies that support the academic programmes of the University and encourage optimum exploitation of the resources of the library. It will be expected to anticipate future and cater to future information needs of its users and patrons
  • Continuous information literacy and orientation to users through a variety of methods in order to provide guidance on use of the library’s collection and inculcate lifelong information skills.
  • Adopting technologies that will make information resources accessible to the University community in an equitable, efficient and effective manner.
  • Organize and preserve locally produced knowledge within KDF/ NDU-K and provide access.
  • Providing a secure and conducive learning environment for use of library resources.
  • Ensuring that the university library staff are appropriate, qualified and commensurate with the academic programmes offered as well as the institutional population.
  • Adopting an administrative structure that is fully integrated with the institutional organizational structure.
  • Providing a library budget that is in line with the applicable CUE guidelines and standards.
  • Promote academic integrity and support research, while also deterring plagiarism among users.

General Rules & Regulations

  • Only authorized registered users will be allowed to use the library.
  • The number of items to be borrowed shall differ according to user category, loan period, resource type, location and policy
  • Reference and some controlled materials may be used in the library.
  • Lost library books shall be replaced by surcharging the person concerned at 150% of the item’s market price
  • The library reserves the right to cancel membership on the basis of misconduct.
  • Use of mobile phones in the library is STRICTLY prohibited and will be punished by suspension.
  • Smoking, drinking and eating are not allowed in the library.
  • Briefcases, large bags, and parcels must be deposited at the baggage area.
  • Users who inconvenience others in any way while in the library shall be subjected to disciplinary action.
  • All library material must be handled with care.
  • Loss of library material should be reported immediately.
  • Users must declare what they are carrying when entering and leaving the library.
  • Silence must be maintained in the library.
  • Library materials are not to be re-shelved by the user.
  • All users must clear all dues with the library on leaving or exiting from the university KDF.

College Libraries

National Defence College Library

Overview

National Defence College (NDC) library serves the National Defence College community. It is located inside the college at Karen, Warai North Road. NDC library recognizes university libraries are partners in the educational vision and mission of the mother institution. As such, the library seeks to develop and support information-literate university community that can discover, access, and use information resources effectively for studying, teaching, research and lifelong learning. Additionally, the college library (in conjunction the main library) supports continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness, accreditation and such other accountability requirements.

The success of the library will be contingent on continuing to align library goals with the goals of the College as a whole. NDC’s reputation as a top-rated College continues to grow. Similarly, the library continues to distinguish itself as a leader in transforming, preserving, and making accessible enviable information resources. The library endeavor to translate the changing and diverse research needs of our College into innovative and effective services and information experiences.

Joint Command and Staff College Library

Overview

Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) library serves the college community. It is located inside the college at Karen, Westwood Park Road. JCSC library recognizes that university libraries are partners in the educational vision and mission of the mother institution. As such, the library seeks to develop and support information-literate university community that can discover, access, and use information resources effectively for studying, teaching, research and lifelong learning.

Kenya Military Academy Library

Overview

The Kenya Military Academy serves the entire Military academy community. It is located within the Gen R Kibwana wing of the main administration block that is Gen D R Tonje complex. The main users of the library are Cadets (students of Bsc in Defence and Security) and the entire Academy staff. It strives to provide information resources that propel the Academy’s Vision of being a Centre of excellence for foundational Military Officer training and education. The library therefore endeavors to provide relevant and adequate information resources to the ever-changing Cadets training needs. Since the Academy is the entry of the Cadets into the military life, the library aims to inculcate in the cadets an understanding of the importance of continuous and effective use of information resources for studying, teaching, research and lifelong learning

Information Resources

The library houses about 15,000 copies of textbooks and handbooks that cover various subject areas that include Military studies, Diplomacy, International relations, History studies, Research, Psychology, Communication among others. It has about 2500 copies of professional military manuals. These are available on the shelves. It has a sitting capacity of 450 users at any one time. The library further provides users with electronic resources through the Kenya Library and Information Recourses Consortium subscription platform. It further provides Internet access to the users through the Online Resource centre.

International Peace Support Training Centre Library

Overview

The International Peace Support Training Centre’s library is located at the main campus along Westwood Park Road in Karen, Nairobi. Our mission is to provide relevant academic and information resources for research to all our clients. It falls under the Department of Peace and Security Research Department (PSRD) and is located on the 1st floor of the Research and Simulation Complex building, at IPSTC Karen.

Monday – Friday 0800 – 1700HOURS Weekends and Public Holidays CLOSED

Information Resources

IPSTC library has a collection of over 3,000 books. The library also stocks periodicals of IPSTC research products in the category of Issue Briefs, Occasional Papers, Africa Amani Journals and Peace Builders Newsletters. The library has several assorted Books, Pamphlets and IPSTC Research Products, Journals, UN blue helmet manuals, magazines, and Course materials in soft copy covering thematic areas such as Conflict Prevention, Conflict Management, Post Conflict Recovery, Pre-deployment Training, International Security, Preventive Diplomacy, Media and Politics, Gender and Governance, Law of Armed Conflict, Humanitarian Coordination, International Relations, Human/Children Rights and General Management. In addition to the print collections, the library, through NDU-K subscribes to Kenya Library and Information Services Consortium (KLISC) for electronic databases containing journals and e-books relevant to academic courses offered in this college.

Defence Forces Technical College Library

Overview

DEFTEC library is an academic library that serves the DEFTEC community. It is located within the college at Embakasi along Airport North Road. The library aims at providing a dynamic and quality user oriented library and information services that promotes teaching, learning, research, and instilling life-long skills.

Information Resources

The library has built a high quality collection, by selecting, acquiring and processing current and relevant information resources that meets the information needs of the library patrons. The collection has 5000 books on core subjects such as: mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics engineering and defence information systems .The books are well displayed on the book shelves, and are easily accessed through library catalogue.

Defence College of Health Sciences Library

Overview

Defence College of Health Sciences (DCHS) library is located inside the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital, along Raila Odinga Road. It serves the Defence College of Health Sciences community. DCHS library recognizes that university libraries are partners in the educational vision and mission of National Defence University-Kenya. Therefore, the library seeks to equip and support information seeking university community through access and use information resources effectively for studying, teaching, research and continuous professional development. Additionally, the college library (in conjunction the main library) supports continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness, accreditation and such other accountability requirements.

DCHS endeavors to be a premier institution in medical training and research. For successful achievement of this vision the library will continue to align its goals with those of the College as a whole. Similarly, the library continues to distinguish itself as a leader in transforming, preserving, and making accessible enviable information resources. The library endeavor to translate the changing and diverse research needs of our College into innovative and effective services and information experiences.

NDU-K Library Services

Lending

Different categories of library users shall have different lending periods and entitlements as stipulated in the library Rules and Regulations

Loans are renewable subject to demand.

Patrons may reserve information resources that are already in circulation. Material so reserved will be lent out on first come first serve basis.

Members will be informed when reserved material become available via email and must collect them within 24 hours of the notice. Failure

Books and materials designated reference and classified are for use in the library only on request. Such materials will be determined by the University Librarian in consultation with the University management.

Journals will not be lent out.

The library reserves the right to recall material on loan and may restrict circulation of any book in the library.

If the information resources are not returned after three months, they shall be deemed lost, and recovery procedure instituted using the approved instruments.

Reference

Reference services are complemented by trainings, workshops, and information literacy programmes, which provide orientation tours, scheduled workshops on specific topics, and course-related sessions.

Reserve or Short-loan Service.

This shall be available to users of information resources on high demand. Lecturers shall recommend library resources to be placed on reserve/short loan.

Inter-Library Loan

Through the networks KLISC the library has inter-library arrangements with several libraries. Details of the service are available on request. The library also coordinates its services with the sister college libraries as: National Defence College Library, Joint Command Staff College, Kenya Military Academy Library, International Peace Support Training College Library, Defence Forces Technical College Library, Defence College of Health Science & National Intelligence Research University College Library.
