Application Guidelines

  1. Payments:

    • All application fees, university fees, or any other payments as directed by NDU-K must be made through the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) eCitizen portal: https://ndu.ecitizen.go.ke.

    • A non-refundable application fee of KES 3,000 applies to all applicants.

  2. Application Process:

    • Step 1: Log in to the IPSTC admissions portal: https://admissions.ipstc.org/ and fill in the application form.

    • Step 2: At the payment stage, open the NDU-K eCitizen portal: https://ndu.ecitizen.go.ke, make the payment, and obtain a physical receipt.

    • Step 3: Download the eCitizen receipt. Return to the IPSTC portal, log in again, and upload the eCitizen receipt as part of your application documents.

  3. Important Note:

    • Applications without proof of eCitizen payment (KES 3,000) will not be processed.

    • Payments made directly to the bank will not be accepted.


Programme Details

Aim of the Programme

The PhD in Crisis and Disaster Management aims to:

  • Build a scientific knowledge base to transform and enhance crisis and disaster management practices.

  • Develop innovative, skilled practitioners equipped with a critical understanding of sustainable development issues within crises and disasters.

  • Provide advanced knowledge to improve policy formulation in Crisis Response and Disaster Management.


Mode of Study

  • The programme spans three years using a blended learning approach (in-person and virtual classes).

  • Year 1: Coursework (two semesters).

  • Year 2 & 3: Research thesis.

  • The flexible structure allows students to balance studies with professional duties, enhancing both academic and work performance capabilities.


Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • a) Master’s degree in Crisis Response and Disaster Management.

  • b) Master’s degree from National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) or any recognized institution in relevant disciplines such as:

    • Meteorology, Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Remote Sensing, Public Health, Climate Change, Engineering.

  • c) Master’s degree (by thesis or equivalent examination) from a university recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE) and NDU-K Senate.
