JOINT COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE
Maj Gen E M Kinuthia EBS SS 'ndu' (China) 'psc' (K) is the current Commandant of Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC). He was enlisted into the KDF on 16 March 1987 and commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant on 15 April 1988 and posted to Moi Air Base where he commenced his flying career. He graduated as a pilot in March 1990 after which he was posted to Laikipia Air Base. He further trained and qualified as a fighter pilot later on, in May 1999 he graduated as a Qualified Flying Instructor.
In addition, he holds a Masters of Military Science of National Security Strategy from National Defence University-China, Bachelors of Business Management from Mt. Kenya University and a Diploma in Strategic Studies from the University of Nairobi.
Prior to the current appointment, he served as the Director National Air Support Department (NASD) other positions held include the Director of Academic Affairs at National Defence University-Kenya, the Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy at DHQ, Base Commander of Laikipia Airbase (LAB), Deputy Base Commander of LAB and Commanding Officer of the Tactical Fighter Wing in LAB among others.
In 2004 he served in the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) as a Military Observer. He is decorated with the medals of Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) and Silver Star (SS) among others.
The Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) trains middle level officers in defence and strategy at the operational level. The college develops professional knowledge and skills and prepares its students for advanced responsibilities in command and staff. Students are offered defence and academic modules to equip them with the capacity to adapt and navigate the evolving, complex and ambiguous security environment. Upon completing the academic module, the participants are awarded a Postgraduate Diploma or Diploma certificate in Defence and Strategic Studies, depending on individual entry level. The academic module exposes the learners to national, regional and international security dynamics that impact Kenya’s national interests. Hence, NDU-K will enhance the capacity for training, academic studies and research necessary for understanding, analysing and providing solutions to contemporary security challenges.
Through the JCSC, the University will train mid-level officers in defence and strategy at the operational level. The college develops professional knowledge, skills and understanding of middle-level officers and prepares them for advanced or complex responsibilities in command and staff. Students are taken through military and academic modules that prepare them to have the capacity to be adaptable to navigate the increasingly evolving, complex and ambiguous security environment.
Upon completing the academic module, the participants are awarded a Postgraduate Diploma or Diploma certificate in Defence and Strategic Studies, depending on their entry levels
The academic module exposes the officers to national, regional and international security dynamics that impact Kenya’s national interests. To this end, NDU-K will provide the officers with the academic platform to undertake studies and research to equip course participants with the intellectual attributes necessary for understanding, critically analysing and providing effective solutions to contemporary security challenges.
The University will ensure that JCSC produces well-trained graduates who are mission ready and serve in various capacities in Command and Staff responsibilities.
