FORGING NATIONAL SECURITY THROUGH ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

National Defence University – Kenya (NDU- K) Vice- Chancellor (VC), Major General Said  Farah,  today presided over the Opening Ceremony of the 1st NDU-K & Anti- Counterfeit Authority (ACA) Course  on Ethics and Leadership for National Security at the University Seat in Lanet, Nakuru.

The one- week course is a collaborative venture between the NDU-K and ACA and is tailored towards enhancing leadership and governance, deepen understanding on the roles of ACA in national security as well appreciating aspects of intellectual property enforcement and related form of illicit trade for national security.

While addressing the course participants, the VC, acknowledged the importance of training in improving the skills and competencies of the participants in dealing with emerging security issues and anti-counterfeit mandate.

He expressed his optimism that the course will contribute immensely in shaping strategic direction, understanding and perception of national security issues.

In his remarks, the Chairperson of ACA Board, Hon Josephat Kabeabea applauded the NDU-K leadership for collaborating with the ACA in capacity building and upskilling of the staff. He underscored the need for enhanced collaboration in tackling counterfeiting and illicit trade that had taken a global dimension.

"Our goal is not only to enhance the skills and knowledge of our leadership and staff but to underscore the indispensable connection between our work and the socio-economic development and human security of our beloved nation and beyond," he noted.

On his part, the Executive Director, ACA, Dr Robi Mbugua Njoroge, elucidated that the training marks a significant milestone in commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the critical nexus between Anti-Counterfeit practices and National Security.

He said that the course resonates well with the whole-of-Government approach to the complex national security as it allows the two institutions to share and work together towards promoting national values as well combating illicit trade.

Further, he urged the participants to fortify matters of national security through knowledge, ethics, and strategic thinking, adding that the skills honed during the training will contribute significantly to collective responsibility in safeguarding the interest of Kenya and beyond.

Last year, NDU-K signed a memorandum of understanding with ACA, allowing, among other things, the University to train ACA personnel in matters of national security and strategy.

The university is mandated to create national awareness on national security and strategy for government institutions, ministries, departments, agencies and county governments.

The course has brought together 20 participants drawn from various sectors of ACA.
