A MILESTONE OF EXCELLENCE: NDU-K MARKS 5 YEARS OF IMPACT AND SERVICE

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) has officially launched a month-long 5th anniversary campaign under the unifying motto “Stronger Together,” marking five years of steady growth, national service and commitment to excellence in defence and security education.

Since its establishment, NDU-K has emerged as a key pillar in developing strategic leadership and strengthening professional capacity within Kenya’s defence and security sectors. The anniversary message, “Five Years of Advancing Strategic Leadership for National Security and Development,” not only reflects institutional progress but also tells a human story of students, faculty and communities whose lives have been shaped by the University’s mission.

The celebrations go beyond reflection and recognition, placing strong emphasis on community engagement and shared responsibility. The campaign launch was marked by a symbolic 5-kilometre walk that brought together the University’s top leadership and staff -an expression of unity and a reminder of the importance of moving forward together.

Speaking during the flag-off and official launch, Vice-Chancellor Lieutenant General David Tarus reflected on the University’s journey, highlighting key achievements including the expansion of academic programmes, growth in research capacity and strengthened partnerships both locally and internationally. He also emphasized the need to continuously adapt to evolving security challenges through modern training approaches.

He underscored that the anniversary is not only about celebrating milestones, but also about reaffirming purpose—preparing skilled professionals capable of addressing complex global threats while remaining grounded in service to society.

Highlighting the spirit of NDU-K at five years, the Vice-Chancellor pointed to a series of planned activities, including a medical outreach programme and corporate social responsibility initiatives at a children’s home, as well as a recently concluded tree-planting exercise. These activities, he noted, reflect the University’s core values and its commitment to community impact.

“This is the kind of university we want to be—not one that exists in isolation behind high walls and barbed wire, but one that is known for what it gives to its community and to its country,” he said.

As NDU-K marks this five-year milestone, its message remains clear: excellence is not measured solely by academic achievement or institutional growth, but also by the positive impact made in the lives of people and communities. Through its continued commitment to service, collaboration and shared responsibility, the University truly embodies the spirit of being “Stronger Together.”
