NDU-K CHAMPIONS SPORTS AND SUSTAINABILITY AT THE MAU-EGERTON CROSS COUNTRY
National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) proudly sponsored and participated in the 11th edition of the Mau–Egerton Cross Country, not only for it's competitive spirit, but also for it's steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
The annual sporting event set against the backdrop of the vital Mau Forest ecosystem and held at the main campus of Egerton University in Njoro, brought together athletes, institutions, and community members from across the country to promote endurance sports while advancing awareness on conservation.
Demonstrating resilience and competitive excellence, the NDU-K team delivered an impressive performance, emerging as 1st Runners-Up in the 4km race earning a well deserved trophy. This achievement underscores the University’s dedication to holistic development- nurturing not only academic and professional excellence but also physical fitness, teamwork, and adaptability. It further highlights NDU-K’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with other institutions and strategic partners in advancing national development.
By sponsoring the event, NDU-K reinforced its support for partnerships and community engagement initiatives that enhance environmental conservation and contribute to broader national development goals. Through such involvement, the University continues to demonstrate leadership beyond the classroom, actively participating in community-based initiatives while upholding its core values of excellence, integrity, and service.
Lauding the successful event, the Vice Chancellor NDU-K Lieutenant General David Tarus, commended all participants and particularly cited the NDU-K team for their discipline, resilience, and competitive spirit. He noted that their performance reflected the highest standards of professionalism and teamwork, embodying the core values upheld by the university.
The Vice-chancellor also observed that the long-standing partnership between the National Defence University-Kenya and Egerton University is built on a foundation of mutual respect and a shared vision for national progress. This bond has fostered a consistent tradition of cross-invitations to key institutional milestones, bridging the gap between academic research and strategic security.
Lt Gen Tarus said the participation in the Egerton University Mau Cross Country is a testament to this synergy; by running together to support the conservation of the Mau Forest, both institutions affirm that environmental stewardship is a vital pillar of national stability.
Speaking during the event, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Festus Ng’eno, emphasized the critical role of institutions of higher learning in safeguarding environmental ecosystems. He noted that sustainability is a shared responsibility and commended participating universities for leveraging sports as a platform to champion environmental stewardship.
