TPDF EXPLORES BEST PRACTICES IN DEFENCE EDUCATION DURING NDU-K BENCHMARKING VISIT

A delegation from the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) conducted a benchmarking visit to the National Defence University–Kenya (NDU-K) at the University’s main seat in Lanet, Nakuru County. The visit aimed to provide the delegation with insights into the university’s management and execution of academic and professional training programmes in defence, security, and strategic studies.

The high-level engagement provided a platform for both institutions to share best practices in military education, management systems, and training programmes. During the visit, the delegation engaged with university leadership and senior officers to gain insights into modern defence education management and professional military education structure.

In his remarks, the NDU-K Vice-Chancellor, Lieutenant General David Tarus, acknowledged the longstanding cordial relationship between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), noting that it has enabled continuous collaboration in several regional and international security initiatives aimed at strengthening peace and collective security.

He emphasized that such partnerships enhance bilateral interoperability and strengthen the ability of the two defence forces to work cohesively in addressing regional security concerns.

Highlighting the rapidly evolving and complex nature of contemporary security threats, Lt Gen Tarus underscored the importance of professional military education and quality research in developing the capabilities and capacities required to effectively respond to these challenges. He reaffirmed NDU-K’s commitment to partnering with TPDF in advancing academic excellence and delivering quality training that meets international standards.

“We believe that engagements such as this, strengthen professional networks, deepen cooperation between our institutions and contribute to building a shared understanding of the security challenges facing our region. Such interactions also create opportunities for collaboration in research, training and the advancement of professional military education within our respective countries,” said Lt Gen Tarus.

Colonel Joseph Julian Likalangu, the TPDF Head of Delegation, reaffirmed the importance of collaboration with NDU-K in defence education and security programmes. He expressed commitment to strengthening partnerships in research, faculty exchange, technical capacity development and curriculum development.

As part of the visit, the TPDF delegation is scheduled to tour various NDU-K colleges, including the Kenya Military Academy (KMA), the National Defence College (NDC) and Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) for familiarization and further exchange of knowledge.

The benchmarking exercise offers an opportunity for knowledge exchange and strengthening cooperation between the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces and National Defence University–Kenya, particularly in the areas of military education, professional development, and regional security collaboration.
