NDU-K Senate and Board of Examiners Convene for Pivotal Sessions as University Marks Five Years of Excellence and Service

The 18th Regular Senate Meeting, held alongside the 14th Regular Board of Examiners Meeting of the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) at the University seat, marked a defining milestone in the institution’s journey of growth, transformation, and academic excellence as it celebrates five years since its establishment. The engagements brought together the University and its colleges leadership, Senate members, and key academic stakeholders to deliberate on critical academic, administrative, and institutional matters aimed at advancing the University’s mandate of providing professional military education, training, research, and innovation.

The meetings offered an important platform to reflect on the remarkable progress achieved by the University over the past five years. Among the notable milestones highlighted were the expansion of academic programmes, strengthening of research and innovation capacity, enhancement of governance structures, and the establishment of strategic partnerships and collaborations at both national and international levels.

The Board of Examiners also reviewed and validated students’ academic performance and examination results, reaffirming the University’s steadfast commitment to quality assurance, academic integrity, and excellence in higher education.

A key area of focus during the deliberations was the ongoing institutional quality audit. Senate members emphasized the need for collective responsibility, institutional preparedness, and coordinated efforts across all colleges, schools, and departments to address identified gaps, strengthen internal systems, and ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements. The discussions underscored the University’s determination to continuously improve institutional performance while safeguarding academic credibility and sustaining its charter status.

In line with its vision of promoting innovation and responsive higher education, the Senate further considered several transformative academic and policy proposals designed to enhance the University’s academic competitiveness and relevance. The proposed initiatives are expected to improve accessibility, flexibility, and inclusivity in learning while effectively responding to the evolving educational and professional demands within the defence and security sector.

In a move aimed at addressing emerging and contemporary challenges in areas such as security studies, psychosocial support, leadership, and disaster management, the meeting also deliberated on the introduction and review of specialized academic programmes designed to enhance the University’s responsiveness, relevance, and contribution to national and regional security needs.

Chairing the sessions, Vice Chancellor, Lieutenant General David Tarus commended the significant progress the University has continued to register across various academic, research, and student-centred initiatives, noting that these achievements have further strengthened NDU-K’s position as a strategic centre of excellence in defence and security education.

He expressed appreciation for the commitment, teamwork, and professionalism demonstrated by members of the Senate, faculty, and staff, observing that their collective efforts continue to make a meaningful contribution to national stability and development through quality education, research, innovation, and professional training.

The Vice-Chancellor further reaffirmed the University’s commitment to continued compliance with established standards, policies, and regulations in order to safeguard its charter status while enhancing institutional excellence and sustainability in defence and security education.

As NDU-K continues to position itself as a premier institution in defence, security, and strategic studies, the deliberations underscored the University’s unwavering dedication to nurturing competent leaders, advancing knowledge, and contributing to national, regional, and global peace and security. The landmark meeting therefore not only celebrated the University’s achievements over the past five years but also reaffirmed its vision for continued growth, innovation, and institutional transformation in the years ahead.
