Advancing strategic academic partnerships and fostering cross-institutional knowledge exchange are essential to navigating today’s increasingly complex and multidimensional security landscape. In recognition of this imperative, a delegation from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, undertook a familiarisation visit to the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) to gain deeper insights into the University’s mandate, institutional structure, academic programmes, research priorities, and contribution to strategic leadership development and national security.

The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to gain a deeper understanding of NDU-K’s distinctive role in developing strategic leaders equipped to respond effectively to emerging national, regional, and global security challenges. It also provided a platform for both institutions to explore areas of mutual interest and identify opportunities for a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership in defence and security education, collaborative research, innovation, knowledge exchange, academic and professional development, and other areas of shared interest.

During the engagement between delegations from the two institutions, NDU-K Vice-Chancellor, Lieutenant General David Tarus, underscored the importance of strategic partnerships among institutions of higher learning in advancing knowledge generation, strengthening professional capacity, and enhancing strategic leadership.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the value of partnerships that facilitate academic and professional exchanges, collaborative research, knowledge sharing, curriculum development, and the establishment of programmes that respond to evolving security and societal needs.

He reaffirmed NDU-K’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with reputable local, regional, and international institutions as part of its broader mandate to advance education, research, innovation, and other mutually beneficial initiatives. He noted that such partnerships are critical to creating sustainable platforms for shared learning, institutional growth, and the development of innovative solutions to contemporary security challenges.

The Stellenbosch University head of the delegation, Prof. Andries Fokkens, appreciated the opportunity to engage with NDU-K and gain a better understanding of the University’s distinctive role in Kenya’s strategic leadership and national security architecture. He underscored the importance of institutional linkages in creating platforms for academics and professionals to exchange ideas, share experiences, and generate knowledge that contributes to addressing contemporary and emerging challenges.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured the Kenya Military Academy (KMA) and the National Defence College (NDC), both colleges of NDU-K. The visits provided first-hand insights into the colleges’ respective academic programmes, training activities, institutional mandates, and contributions to professional military education and strategic leadership development.
