SHAPING KENYA’S DEFENCE FUTURE: NDU-K HOSTS DEFENCE POLICY REVIEW FORUM
The National Defence University–Kenya (NDU-K) hosted a stakeholder engagement forum on the Draft National Defence Policy, led by the Defence Headquarters’ Strategy, Planning and Policy (SP&P) Department. The forum forms part of ongoing consultations aimed at refining and strengthening Kenya's National Defence Policy.
The engagement is also part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Defence to develop a cohesive and forward-looking framework that will guide the operations and strategic direction of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) amid an increasingly complex and dynamic global security environment.
The forum brought together key stakeholders to review the draft policy, share expert insights, and propose recommendations to address emerging national, regional, and global security challenges.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Major General Stephen Mutuku, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Security Studies, reaffirmed NDU-K’s commitment to supporting national defence through research, training, and strategic partnerships.
He emphasized the importance of stakeholder input in developing a responsive, forward-looking policy aligned with Kenya’s security priorities.
The review committee, led by Colonel David Bii, highlighted the need for inclusive participation in shaping a comprehensive policy that reflects Kenya’s defence vision, strategic interests, and evolving threat landscape.
Key discussions focused on modernization of defence capabilities, integration of technology, investment in research and development, and strengthening defence acquisition systems.
The outcomes of the forum will inform the finalization of the National Defence Policy, which will guide Kenya’s defence strategy in the years ahead.
