The National Defence University- Kenya (NDU-K) has called for a shift from theory-heavy instruction to practical, mission-focused training. The University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Ann Muigai, challenged military trainers to adopt approaches that produce competent, adaptable and operationally ready personnel.

Speaking during the official opening of a four-day Competency-Based Training (CBT) Workshop organized by NDU-K at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Prof. Muigai who also represented the University Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Tarus observed that the rapidly evolving and complex security environment requires personnel whose skills can be demonstrated in real operational contexts.

She noted that effective training must translate into measurable competencies that enhance mission success and operational effectiveness. The workshop has brought together military trainers and key training stakeholders from across the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

The four-day workshop will allow for participants to interrogate the practical application of the Competency-Based Training model within Professional Military Education and Training (PMET). Areas of focus include the identification of core military competencies, development of relevant and responsive curricula, application of effective instructional methodologies and the conduct of credible, outcome-based assessments.

The course structure further provides a platform for dialogue, peer learning and hands-on engagement. Through expert presentations, group discussions and practical exercises where the participants will share experiences and best practices on integrating competency-based approaches to strengthen training delivery and outcomes across military training institutions.
