NDU-KENYA, KENYA PRISONS SERVICE IN COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS

National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) recently hosted a delegation from Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) at the University Seat in Nakuru. The delegation led by Commandant, Prison Staff Training College(PSTC), Senior Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (SACGP) Angus Masoro, was seeking areas of possible collaboration and partnership in education and training with NDU-K.

In his address delivered on his behalf by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Research, Innovation and Security Studies, Major General William Shume, the Vice-Chancellor, Major General Said Farah, appreciated the existing symbiotic relationship between KDF and KPS, pointing out that NDU-K is ready to collaborate and partner in education and training as a way of strengthening its niche while expanding its portfolio consistent with national security needs in support of the national agenda. He noted that NDU-K continues to consolidate its position as a strategic stakeholder in national security and strategy in order to navigate the contemporary security environment by providing necessary assistance to government agencies.

On his part, PSTC Commandant SACG Angus Masoro, highlighted the privilege of working hand in hand with NDU-K on education and security programmes. He observed that the partnership KPS is seeking will help upgrade the training of its personnel in areas of security and correctional science in order to contend with emerging trends in the correctional and rehabilitation institutions. He underscored the significant role played by Prison Officers in dealing with violent extremism which requires specialized collaborative programmes to de-radicalize and rehabilitate inmates for their eventual smooth reintegration to the society.

He added that the quality of courses offered at NDU-K will equip KPS personnel with vast knowledge and skills they require to measure up to International Standards as well as conform to United Nations Minimum Rules for treatment of prisoners. Possible areas of collaboration and partnership discussed included curriculum development, implementation, validation and review, staff mentorship, visiting lecturers in specific areas, Tparticipation in academic seminars and workshops, joint publications and joint research in areas of mutual interest, among others.

The KPS delegation included ACGP Jane Wanjiru, ACP (Dr) Chrisantus Makokha, SSP (Dr) Peter Cheboi and CIP Phoebe Kunzu.
NDU-K team comprised DVC Academic and Students Affairs, Prof Anne Muigai, DVC Finance and Administration, Maj Gen (Rtd) Patrick Amogola, Registrar Academic Affairs, Dr Stephen Mailu, Director Academic Affairs, Brig Dixon Chivatsi and Director Examinations, Brig Elizabeth Omollo, among others.
