The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Council has reaffirmed its focus on academic excellence, research and innovation, governance and institutional capacity as the University strengthens its role in advancing strategic thought and leadership in support of national security and development.

The emphasis was made during the first Council meeting of the 2026/2027 financial year, where the Council reviewed the University’s progress and provided strategic guidance on key priorities aimed at strengthening institutional effectiveness and advancing its mandate.

Chairing the meeting, the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) and Chairperson of the NDU-K Council, General Charles Kahariri, commended University Management, staff, students, the two parent ministries and stakeholders for their contribution to the University's growth and development.

General Kahariri highlighted the expansion of academic programmes and student enrolment, completion of research projects with national impact, continued efforts to strengthen research and innovation, and the growing contribution of the Centre for Security and Strategic Studies (CSSS) to national policy and strategic discourse.

He also underscored the importance of NDU-K’s growing partnerships with local and international institutions, noting their contribution to knowledge exchange, academic excellence and professional development. He called for sustained engagement in areas of mutual strategic interest.

The Vice-Chancellor and Secretary to the Council, Lieutenant General David Tarus, reaffirmed the University's commitment to strengthening governance, advancing academic excellence, promoting research and innovation, enhancing institutional capacity and fostering strategic partnerships despite resource constraints.

Lt Gen Tarus noted that these priorities remain central to the implementation of NDU-K’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027 and its contribution to national security and development. He also appreciated the Council Committees for their dedication and guidance, noting that their work continues to support the University's strategic objectives and strengthen the quality of matters presented for Council consideration.

Reflecting on the University's five-year milestone, Lt Gen Tarus said the occasion provided an opportunity to assess NDU-K's progress, appreciate its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to continued institutional growth and excellence.

The meeting considered key reports on governance, finance and administration, human resource development, infrastructure, academic affairs, research, institutional collaborations and ICT services, providing a platform for the Council to review performance and guide the University's strategic direction.
