Driven by a shared commitment to advancing strategic leadership, evidence-based policymaking, and sustainable peace and security, the National Defence University–Kenya (NDU-K) and the International Relations Society of Kenya (IRSK) have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening knowledge generation, fostering strategic dialogue, and developing innovative solutions to emerging regional and global challenges. The collaboration reflects the shared vision of both institutions to bridge academia and professional practice in shaping responsive and forward-looking security and governance frameworks.

The two institutions formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which establishes a framework for collaboration in joint research, executive education, policy dialogue, scholarly exchange, conferences, and institutional capacity building. Through this partnership, NDU-K and IRSK will leverage their complementary expertise, professional networks, and institutional strengths to strengthen strategic leadership, inform public policy, and advance regional peace, security, governance, and sustainable development.

Speaking during the MoU signing, the NDU-K Vice-Chancellor, Lieutenant General David Tarus, described the partnership as a significant milestone in advancing the University's mission of delivering world-class education, research, and professional training in defence, security, and strategic studies. He observed that today's security environment demands integrated, multidisciplinary approaches, as contemporary threats increasingly intersect with governance, economic resilience, technological advancement, and societal transformation.

The Vice-Chancellor underscored the critical role of collaboration between universities, professional bodies, policymakers, and practitioners in generating practical knowledge, strengthening strategic leadership, and developing evidence-based policy solutions. He expressed confidence that the partnership would produce impactful programmes, research, and policy engagements that not only advance institutional excellence but also support national priorities while contributing to regional peace, stability, and sustainable development.

Dr. Kizito Sabala, the Chairperson of the International Relations Society of Kenya, reaffirmed the Society's commitment to building a strong and enduring partnership with NDU-K. He noted that the collaboration would expand opportunities for strategic dialogue, policy engagement, scholarly exchange, and regional cooperation, while strengthening linkages between academia, policymakers, and practitioners in international relations and security studies.

The Memorandum of Understanding marks the beginning of a long-term strategic collaboration that will harness the strengths of both institutions in addressing evolving security and governance challenges. By fostering collaboration between academia, policymakers, and security practitioners, the partnership is expected to advance research, strengthen evidence-based policy, and enhance strategic leadership in defence, security, and governance.
