National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) is participating in a workshop on Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain ( REAIM) being held at a Nairobi hotel.

The workshop co-hosted by Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea and Kenya’s Ministry of Defence, has brought together a total of 15 countries with over 70 participants. It is aimed at exploring cooperation and exchange of insights for responsible development, deployment and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the military domain.

In his opening address, the Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri highlighted the importance of understanding the impact that AI is having and it's transformative power in technology enhancing capabilities, improving decision making processes and ensuring security and sovereignty of a nation.

"Developing comprehensive regulatory framework that govern the use of AI in military operations is essential. Building local capabilities to develop, deploy and regulate AI is crucial. These frameworks should address issues such as data privacy, security and ethical use. Policy makers must work closely with technologies, ethicists and military experts to create policies that balance innovation with responsibility. " He noted.

Making his remarks on the first day of the workshop, NDU-K Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Research, Innovation and Security Studies, Major General William Shume reiterated NDU-K’s mandate which is to offer advanced educational training, research, academic discourse, as well as equipping security personnel and agencies with knowledge and skills in order to offer solutions to contemporary security challenges.

"NDU-K is committed to promoting responsible use of emerging technologies, including the use of AI in the security domain," the DVC said.

At the same forum, the Col Research at NDU-K’s Centre for Security and Strategic Studies, Col Evans Ombati made a presentation on ‘International, Regional, and National Governance Approaches for AI’. Also in attendance is Col Ronald Makori, the NDU-K Director, Policy, Strategy and Doctrine.
